SAPPHO - Disc Jockey, Music Producer & Multimedia Artist
I’m a music selector and soul reflector. My musical production and DJ'ing contributes to the soundtrack of the cosmic travels of nightlife. I relentlessly research, expand on a narrative, and expose the listener to music they may have never heard but love.
I have always recognized and done my best to honor the fact that DISCO, HOUSE, SOUL, ROCK, JAZZ, HIP-HOP, R&B and TECHNO MUSIC IS BLACK MUSIC...essentially all the music I LOVE.
All of the music that I create and perform has been influenced by and owes its existence to BIPOC and LGBTQ originators who have been systematically marginalized by society at large, and within the music industry specifically.
My artistic moniker is in homage to the 6th Century BCE poet Sappho who hailed from the Isle of Lesbos, which makes her a Lesbian. Not really in the modern sense. Still, Lesbos is where the word comes from, and Sappho was part of a tightly knit collective of women, and she did love them passionately. Part of Sappho’s legacy is the style of poetry she helped pioneer. She experimented with meter; she created prose not just about gods and heroes, but of all kinds of things and people and feelings. This was the poet Sappho’s art form, and no one did it better than she. Her writing is lucid and intimate. Her skill is precise, yet she delivers it simply, in everyday words. Controversially, her eroticism is unapologetic. She studies her love in all its honest shades: angry and adoring, for both women and men. I hope to continue her legacy, not with poetry of words but with music.
As a white queer musical artist with a deep passion for creating and participating in LGBTQAI+ performative spaces, I continue the personal and collaborative work of being a better anti-racist ally and dismantling all aspects of white/cis/hetero/patriarchal supremacy.
